Feldman E. Lane, CPP - 2012 Virginia Statewide Payroll Professional of the Year

On October 11th, 2012 the Virginia Statewide Payroll Conference awarded the Payroll Professional of the Year to Feldman E. Lane, CPP of Altria.

Feldman Lane has held most elected offices, including President; he has served on many committees and directorships at the local and national level. Beginning in 1998 his service includes several years as NPW Chair, Program Chair, Conference Chair, Community Outreach Chair, and Chapter of the Year Coordinator. Mr. Lane served as President in 2003 and 2004, during which the Richmond Chapter took first place Chapter of the Year. As President his goals were to build membership and take hold of the budget process for the Chapter.

He has been a Certified Payroll Professional since 1998 and a leader at the Local Chapter and Statewide Conference levels, instrumental in forming the Virginia Statewide Conference. He served as chair of the conference when it was just a Richmond Chapter conference and then 2 years as the VSPC Conference Chair. Mr. Lane served on the APA National Hotline Committee.

Feldman has spent 20 years in the payroll industry. He was Payroll and HR Manger at Briggs Hospitality for 10 years. He became Payroll Manager of Carpenter Company from 2001-2003. In 2004 he took a position as Payroll Supervisor for Altria (Philip Morris). Mr. Lane acquired a BS in Business in 1982 at UNC-Greensboro, a Magna Cum Laude graduate, inducted into National Economics Honor Society-Omicron Delta Epsilon. He has a MA in Economics 1984, UNC at Greensboro. Mr. Lane maintained his PHR 2001-2003. Feldman is a devoted father and husband and can't seem to do enough for his wife and daughters.

He selflessly worked for the Richmond chapter for 9 years, as President, Vice-President, Secretary, Conference Coordinator, Director of Sponsor Relations and Hospitality Chair. During his tenure as President, he reached the ultimate goal of Chapter of the Year. He also led the board to rewrite the Chapter By-Laws. As NPW Chair, he represented the Chapter in a TV commercial about NPW. He participated in a rest stop awareness initiative of NPW on Interstate 64. As Community Outreach chair, he led a group to visit a nursing home at Christmas taking gifts and fellowship. He also collected food and gifts for a family adopted through Bainbridge Ministries.

In 2004 he was diagnosed with Stage 4 Thyroid Cancer, which he still battles today, but he continued his position as President and Conference Chair through all of the sickness and treatments. Feldman was inducted into the Richmond Chapter Payroll Hall of Fame in 2007. After 1 more year of service on the board, he will receive a Life Achievement Award from the Richmond Chapter for his 10 years of Service and serving as President. He received APA National's Education Grant and a free registration to Congress, which is quite an honor, since only a handful are given nationwide each year.

In short, Mr. Lane's many innovations and leadership have enriched the payroll profession at the Local Chapter, Statewide and National levels. His efforts have led to the betterment and education of hundreds, if not thousands, of people in and out of the payroll profession.

Sandra Paulus  - 2009 VSPC Payroll Professional of the Year

Each year the Virginia Payroll Professional of the Year Award is presented at the Annual Virginia Statewide Payroll Conference in recognition of outstanding service to the payroll community. It is one of the highest honors the Virginia Statewide Payroll Committee bestows upon members and is one of the prestigious awards in the payroll profession. The Virginia Payroll Professional of the year is chosen by an independent and impartial committee. This recognition is special because it recognizes a payroll professional who stands out for their accomplishments, contributions, and outstanding leadership abilities.

This year I was nominated by my employer Davenport for the Virginia Payroll Professional of the Year Award. Of course, I had to provide all of the information to my boss for the nomination, so it was not completely a surprise. I had hopes that I could possibly be selected, but with the many outstanding payroll professionals in our profession, I knew the competition was tough. When my name was called at the VSPC, my knees went weak and it was hard to walk up on the stage. I was so full of emotion, that it was difficult to find the words to thank the VSPC for the recognition. The 11 years of service that I have given to the APA was out of a personal passion that I have for the profession. To be recognized by my peers for doing something I love will forever be one of the highlights of my life. The contacts and friendships made through the APA are invaluable. I would encourage you to become a member of a chapter, volunteer and get involved. We all have valuable talents we could share. Encourage payroll professionals everywhere to stand up and be recognized for their contributions by nominating them for this prestigious award.
